Russell Brand, the British comedian, actor and presenter, was found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault by a jury at Southwark Crown Court in London on Thursday, 5 November, after a four-week trial.

The jury found him not guilty of two other rape charges and of one charge of attempted indecent assault.

Remanded in custody

The judge, Mr Justice Joel Bennathan, remanded Brand in custody. He told him the verdicts meant a “significant custodial term” and that he would stay in prison until he is formally sentenced on Monday.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Brand is also under investigation over further rape allegations, according to UK reports.

How the case began

The charges go back to a 2023 joint investigation by The Times, The Sunday Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches, in which several women made allegations about Brand’s conduct in the 2000s and early 2010s, when he was at the height of his fame on British TV and radio and in Hollywood films.

Brand has denied all the allegations from the start. He has said his relationships were “absolutely and always consensual”. He was charged by the Metropolitan Police in 2025.

Brand was a household name in Britain and the US, from films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek to his short marriage to singer Katy Perry. In recent years he built a large online following with videos on politics, wellness and religion, and many of those followers had defended him. The verdict was one of the top searches in Pakistan on Thursday.

Brand will be sentenced on Monday.
