Every wedding season the same question comes up in family WhatsApp groups: what do I wear to the mehndi? Yellow and green are still the colours, but the winter mehndi is tricky, because the function is often outdoors at night. We looked for yellow and green outfits that are on the brands’ own websites now, and added a bag and a pair of shoes to finish the look. Prices were checked on Wednesday, 4 November.

The yellows

Alkaram butter yellow festive suit (Rs 7,192, was Rs 8,990). An unstitched three-piece with an embroidered lawn shirt, organza borders for the front and sleeves, an embroidered khaadi net dupatta and a cambric trouser. The pale butter shade is softer than haldi yellow and suits the bride’s friends and cousins who want to look coordinated without matching the bride. It is lawn, so wear it at an indoor mehndi or layer a shawl outside.

Zeen mustard khaddar two-piece (Rs 7,990). A stitched khaddar shirt in a warm mustard with small embroidered florals and a beige shalwar. Khaddar is the right weight for a cold night, and mustard is easier to wear than bright yellow for most skin tones.

Zeen lime yellow khaddar two-piece (Rs 7,990). A brighter lime yellow shirt with pink and red embroidery down the front and on the sleeves, over off-white embroidered khaddar culottes. Cheerful, young and very mehndi.

Generation Sunset Spice Co-Ord Set (Rs 5,998). A saffron yellow short shirt with a band neck and a printed balloon shalwar with big red florals, in dobby crepe. The red dupatta in Generation’s photo is styling; the set is shirt and shalwar only. The cheapest outfit in this list and the most fun to dance in.

The greens

Generation Embroidered Farshi Set (Rs 15,500). An emerald green panelled kurta with a keyhole neckline, tassels and embroidery on the yoke and sleeves, over a farshi shalwar with an embroidered border. It is micro-check cambric, and it also comes in naranji (orange), another good mehndi colour. The dressiest choice here.

Bonanza Satrangi Zeenat (Rs 7,690). An unstitched three-piece in deep green with an embroidered front and sleeves on dobby self-jacquard and an embroidered herringbone shawl. The shawl makes it the warmest outfit on this list, ideal for a lawn or rooftop function in December.

Finish the look

Generation Ornate Metal Bag (Rs 9,898). A silver metal bag with engraved traditional motifs and a chain strap. Silver works with both yellow and green, and it will outlast this season.

Sana Safinaz Green Embellished Flats (Rs 2,950, was Rs 5,899). Green flats with a row of shimmering stones across the straps, at half price. Flats matter at a mehndi: you will be dancing, sitting on the floor for the rasm and walking on grass. Sizes 36 to 41.

Styling tips

Keep the jewellery to one statement piece: big jhumkas or a maang tikka, not both. Fresh gajray on the wrist suit every outfit here. If the mehndi is outdoors, pick khaddar or a suit with a shawl, and save lawn and cambric for indoor halls.
