Homes in Karachi and the rest of Sindh and Balochistan will get gas only at meal times this winter. Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) announced on Wednesday, 4 November, that domestic consumers will get gas in three slots, about eight hours in all, starting immediately.

The new SSGC gas timings

  • Breakfast: 6:30 AM to 9 AM
  • Lunch: 12 PM to 2:30 PM
  • Dinner: 6 PM to 9 PM

Outside these hours, households should not count on gas in the pipes. That is roughly 16 hours a day, including the cold late-night and early-morning hours when people want hot water.

SSGC said it was “prioritising domestic consumers by ensuring supply during meal times” and that the schedule follows directions from the federal government. The company said the timings are also on its website and social media accounts.

Why now?

The announcement came a day after a bad gas crisis in Karachi on Tuesday, when many homes say they had no gas even to cook. Since Monday, several different “SSGC schedules” had been circulating on WhatsApp and social media, and the company did not put out one clear statement until late Tuesday evening, which left people guessing.

The shortage comes down to supply and demand: less imported LNG is available, while winter demand for heating and hot water rises every November. Fighting around the Gulf this autumn has also made energy shipments to the region less certain. SSGC has not ruled out further cuts for industry.

What you can do

  • Cook and fill thermoses or water heaters inside the three windows.
  • Never leave a stove knob open waiting for gas to return. When pressure comes back, unlit gas can fill a room. Close every valve when the slot ends.
  • Do not use gas heaters in closed rooms overnight; every winter brings deaths from gas leaks and carbon monoxide.
  • Report a complaint on SSGC’s helpline 1199 if you get no gas inside the announced hours.

What to watch

The real test is whether gas actually arrives with enough pressure inside these hours, especially in high-rise flats and the far ends of the network such as Orangi, Korangi and Gulistan-e-Jauhar, where complaints are loudest. Sui Northern’s schedule for Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is a separate announcement.
