So Kamal has put out its winter Charme collection, and velvet is the star. There are five one-piece velvet shirts, from short kurtas to long kaftans, starting at Rs 7,500 unstitched and Rs 13,000 stitched, plus three embroidered linen suits for winter weddings and dinners. The collection went live on So Kamal’s website this week; we checked every price on Friday, 6 November.

Each piece is sold two ways: as unstitched fabric, or ready-made in small, medium and large for about Rs 5,500 to Rs 6,500 more. The velvet pieces are shirts only, so plan your trousers or shalwar separately. The same collection has matching velvet shalwars (Rs 5,500), raw silk pants (Rs 5,000) and linen trousers (Rs 3,000).

The velvet shirts (Rs 7,500 to Rs 11,000 unstitched)

Burgundy Royale (Rs 10,500; stitched Rs 16,500). A long burgundy velvet shirt with heavy ivory embroidery on the neckline, sleeves, front borders and hem. This is the classic winter wedding look, and the ivory work keeps the deep red from feeling heavy. Gold jhumkas and a plain chiffon dupatta are all it needs.

Midnight Sapphire (Rs 10,500; stitched Rs 16,500). A long midnight-blue velvet kaftan with bold cobalt floral and leaf embroidery and an applique border. Blue on blue is quieter than contrast work, which makes it a smart pick for a valima or a formal dinner where you don’t want to outshine the bride.

Sage Serenity (Rs 7,500; stitched Rs 13,000). The cheapest velvet piece: a short sage-green kurta with ivory embroidery on the hem and sleeves. So Kamal styled it with a matching velvet shalwar. Pastel velvet is less common than maroon and black, so it stands out at a mehndi or dholki.

Emerald Grace (Rs 8,500; stitched Rs 14,000). A short dark green velvet kurta with embroidered panels, sleeves and small sequins that catch the light. In photos it reads almost black, so it is a safe evening choice.

Silver Mist (Rs 11,000; stitched Rs 17,500). A long grey velvet kaftan with soft blush flowers and handmade tassels at the neckline. The most delicate piece in the collection, and the priciest.

The linen suits (Rs 8,500 to Rs 10,800 unstitched)

Linen is lighter than velvet, so these suit Karachi or daytime events up north.

Rosewood Romance (Rs 10,800; stitched Rs 16,500). A peach-pink three-piece: an embroidered kurta, an embroidered dyed dupatta and a shalwar with an embroidered border. Soft and pretty for a daytime nikah.

Crimson Royale (Rs 9,000; stitched Rs 15,500). A deep burgundy three-piece with floral embroidery across the neckline, front and hem, a heavily embroidered dupatta and an embroidered shalwar border. It gives a bridal-family look without bridal prices.

A Burgundy Affair (Rs 8,500; stitched Rs 14,500). A two-piece linen shirt and straight trousers, with gold motifs scattered across the shirt and velvet trims on the front and sleeves. A good middle ground if you want a touch of velvet but not a full velvet outfit.

Is So Kamal’s velvet good value?

Rs 7,500 to Rs 11,000 for an embroidered velvet shirt is mid-range for Pakistani brands this season. The catch is that you still need bottoms and usually a dupatta, so a full outfit lands nearer Rs 13,000 to Rs 16,000 if you buy the matching pieces. If you only want one velvet outfit for the wedding season, Sage Serenity with its matching shalwar is the best value; for a statement, go for Burgundy Royale.
