The rugged, moustached Ali Zafar that fans have been sharing since the weekend is a gangster called Bostan Khan, his character in the upcoming web series Gangs of Khorasan. Zafar has called it a mafia-themed series and the first of its kind in Pakistan.

The look that started it

Zafar posted the first glimpse of the character on social media over the weekend: thick moustache, glasses, a hard stare, nothing like the boy-next-door roles and pop-star image he is known for. He introduced him with one line: “My world. My rules. I AM BOSTAAN KHAN!”

The reaction split into two camps. Plenty of people praised the transformation; plenty of others spent the weekend arguing whether Bostan Khan is the hero or the villain. Zafar has not said.

Why he took it

Asked about the change of image, Zafar said the script “dared” him. “And I don’t walk away from a dare,” he said.

It is a big swing for an actor whose last lead in a live-action film was Teefa in Trouble in 2018, opposite Maya Ali, an action-comedy with a softer edge than this.

Cast and team

According to reports on the project, the cast also includes Feroze Khan, Humaima Malick, Sonya Hussyn and Syed Jibran. Anas Ali is producing, and Hamza Ansari’s name is linked to the direction.

What we don’t know yet

The makers have not announced a release date or the platform it will stream on, and the storyline is still under wraps. The next thing to watch for is a teaser: if the other actors’ looks come out the way Zafar’s did, one character at a time, expect the guessing game over who Bostan Khan really is to keep going.
