Reddit login required: why you'll soon need an account to read most posts
Reddit is ending most logged-out browsing, with tests starting outside the US. What still works without an account, and why the company is doing it.

Reddit is going to make most of the site readable only to people who are logged in. Chief executive Steve Huffman announced the change on the company’s earnings call on Thursday, 29 October, and said the first tests will start this quarter in countries outside the United States, which could include Pakistan.
Reddit calls it one of the biggest shifts in its 21-year history.
What changes for people without an account?
Right now anyone can open almost any Reddit thread without signing in. Under the new plan, browsing the site freely while logged out will mostly stop. According to the company, you will be asked to log in before you can wander from community to community or open a subreddit directly.
Some doors stay open. The Reddit home page will still load for everyone, and Huffman said there will be “some version of Reddit accessible” for people who land on a thread from a Google search or a link a friend shared. Where exactly the login wall appears is still being decided. “We need to find the right boundary,” he said.
Why is Reddit doing this?
Huffman gave three reasons. Logged-in users are worth more to advertisers, because Reddit knows more about what they like. They also stick around longer. And a login wall makes it harder for bots to copy Reddit’s huge archive of conversations, which he called an “extremely valuable corpus of data” in a letter to shareholders.
That last point is about AI. Chatbots have been trained on Reddit threads for years, and Reddit now sells access to its data, including a deal with Google reported to be worth about $60 million a year. Free scraping undercuts those deals.
There is also a traffic problem. Reddit said visits from search fell “meaningfully” last quarter, and Huffman criticised Google’s AI answers for keeping people on Google instead of sending them to sites like Reddit.
Do I have to give my real name?
No. A Reddit account only needs a username and an email or a Google or Apple sign-in, and nothing in the announcement changes that. Huffman also floated an incognito-style mode for people who want to browse without building a history.
What it means in Pakistan
Reddit is where many Pakistani students and freelancers go for honest answers: visa experiences, university reviews, coding help, phone advice. Most of them arrive from a Google search without an account, which, for now, should keep working.
If Pakistan ends up in the first test group, regular readers will be pushed to sign up sooner. Creating an account takes a minute, and a throwaway username is fine.
Reddit has not named the test countries or a date for the wider rollout. That list is the next thing to watch.
