Pakistan beat India by four wickets at the Hong Kong Sixes on Friday, 30 October, chasing 89 with 13 balls to spare. Khawaja Nafay (41 off 12) and captain Abbas Afridi (35 off 8) did almost all the work in a chase that lasted just 3.5 overs at Mission Road Ground in Mong Kok.

This is the result of the Group C match we previewed on Thursday in our Hong Kong Sixes schedule guide. It was also Pakistan’s first win of the tournament: the defending champions had lost their opener to the UAE earlier the same morning, so a second defeat would have ended their hopes of defending the Cup.

How India got to 88

Pakistan won the toss and chose to bowl. India’s innings was carried by Shashank Singh, who smashed 40 off just 11 balls with five sixes and two fours. Nitish Rana added 19 off 14, and T Natarajan finished unbeaten on 12 off 6.

India ended on 88 for 5 from their six overs. Abdul Samad was Pakistan’s best bowler with 2 for 10, while Ahmed Daniyal and Muhammad Shahzad took a wicket each. In a format where 100 is a normal score, keeping India under 90 was the real win.

Nafay and Afridi finish it in a hurry

The chase was over almost before it started. Nafay hit five sixes and two fours in his 41 and added 57 for the second wicket with Afridi, who cleared the rope five times in eight balls. Afridi fell in the third over, caught by Natarajan off Shashank Singh, and Nafay was later dismissed by Rahul Tewatia.

Abdul Samad and Irfan Khan saw Pakistan home. Irfan needed only one delivery and hit it for six. The official scorecard shows Pakistan on 91 for 2 after 3.5 overs. In Sixes cricket a side is all out after losing five wickets, which is why a team two down wins “by four wickets”.

Can Pakistan still reach the Cup semi-finals?

Yes, but it is out of their hands now. Group C has only three teams (Pakistan, India and UAE), and only the group winner goes into the Cup semi-finals. Pakistan have finished their two games with one win and one loss.

Everything rides on India vs UAE on Saturday morning, 31 October. If UAE win, they top the group. If India win, all three teams finish with one win each and the group is decided on run rate, which is where Pakistan’s lightning-fast chase could count. The Cup semi-finals follow the same day, and the Cup, Plate and Bowl finals are on Sunday, 1 November.

Pakistan won the Cup last year by beating Kuwait in the final, and the one game they lost on the way was to India, by two runs on the DLS method. Friday’s win settled that score, at least.
