Qasam, the new Coke Studio Nu.WAV song by Shae Gill, Afusic and Abdullah Kasumbi, went up on streaming platforms on Thursday, 29 October. The official music video has not been released yet: Coke Studio posted a 24-second “Coming Soon” teaser the same day, and it had passed 700,000 views on YouTube by Friday afternoon.

That is a big number for a clip with no date attached, and it shows how much interest a Shae Gill track still pulls four years after Pasoori.

Who made Qasam?

The official audio upload, released under Coke Studio Pakistan through Gali Films, lists three vocalists: Shae Gill, Afusic and Abdullah Kasumbi. Afusic wrote the lyrics, Afusic and Kasumbi composed it together, and Kasumbi produced and mixed it. Sean Tallman did the mastering.

For listeners who only know the names:

  • Shae Gill became a household name in 2022 when she sang Pasoori with Ali Sethi in Coke Studio’s 14th season.
  • Afusic is the voice and writer behind the viral hit Pal Pal, and his earlier Nu.WAV song Dil was one of the platform’s first releases.
  • Abdullah Kasumbi is one of the six producers Coke Studio named for Nu.WAV, alongside Talal Qureshi, Jokhay, Rovalio, Ali Soomro and Umair.

Putting a Pasoori voice with a Pal Pal songwriter is the kind of pairing that gets people clicking before they have heard a note, and the teaser’s numbers suggest that is exactly what is happening.

What is Coke Studio Nu.WAV?

Nu.WAV is not Coke Studio season 16. Coca-Cola Pakistan launched it in September as a separate platform for younger artists, with six songs released one by one instead of a full season at once. Its executive producer, Kamal Khan, put the idea simply when it was announced: “Each song has its own world because each artist does.”

The six songs are Maheya, Dil, Rangeen, Shabnam, Qasam and Ae Deewan e Dil. Rangeen (Hasan Raheem, Izzchughtai and Umair) came out on 18 September, Maheya (Asim Azhar, AARYAN and Rovalio) on 2 October and Shabnam (Maanu, Zoha Waseem and Talal Qureshi) on 18 October. Qasam is the fifth, which leaves only Ae Deewan e Dil to come.

Reaction to Nu.WAV has been mixed since its first single, Dil, drew criticism online as well as praise. Qasam is the second Nu.WAV song with Afusic on it, so it is also his second shot at winning those listeners over.

Where to listen, and when is the video?

The audio is already on YouTube Music and the other streaming platforms that carry Coke Studio releases. Coke Studio has not given a date for the video. Going by the earlier Nu.WAV songs, which came with full videos and behind-the-scenes recording clips, expect the video on the Coke Studio Pakistan YouTube channel first, followed by a “Recording” and “Lyrics” upload.
